"Heavy moments don’t define me—they remind me to slow down and care for myself"

💌 Fab at Fifty Plus: Your Midlife Love Letter

Issue No. 14 – Tuesday, September 16, 2025

Hey Fab Fam,

As August slipped away and September came into view, that familiar heaviness crept back in. A mild depression, the kind I know too well. For years I believed it had no rhyme or reason—it just showed up because that’s what depression does. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to understand myself better. I’ve realized that when I go through hard or negative things, my instinct is to tuck my feelings deep inside. I don’t even realize I’m holding on to them until the weight settles in my chest like a stone.

What I’ve also learned is that it’s important not to deny how I feel. To acknowledge it, to validate it, and then to look at it with a logical mind. Feelings are real, but they don’t always tell the full truth. The truth is, no—I’m not where I want to be. I’m far from it. But the other truth is, no one is rushing me but myself. I’m the one putting that pressure on, which means I’m also the one who can take it off.

The first thing that surfaced as I looked inward was this: I turn 52 at the end of the month. Could that be part of it? Maybe. I tell people all the time that aging is a gift, that we’re not on a timetable for our wants and desires. And I do believe that. I stand on that truth. But believing it doesn’t mean I never feel the quiet panic of time pressing in, the sense of a rope tightening just a little bit more.

So here I am, reminding myself—just as I remind you each week—that it’s better to go slowly and happily than to try to seize the whole world and stress myself out. That progress doesn’t need to be rushed. That sometimes the bravest, most powerful choice we can make is to catch ourselves in those heavy moments, name what we’re feeling, and then move forward gently, one step at a time.

And with that, let’s step into this week together. With light and love,

Izzie

Let go of: “If I feel down something is wrong with me.”

Claim this instead: “Heavy feelings are not flaws but a signal to check in with myself.

When life feels heavy, gratitude becomes a lantern in the dark. Thank yourself for simply showing up today. Name one small comfort—a warm drink, a quiet breath, a caring word—that lightens the load, even a little. Gratitude doesn’t erase the weight, but it reminds us we are not carrying it alone.

Gratitude shifts the story from pressure to presence.

Today’s Reflection carries a strange, beautiful balance. Gratitude for the lives we’ve built, the people we love, the lessons we’ve learned. And yet, woven into that gratitude, grief sometimes rises too—for the years that slipped away too quickly, for the dreams deferred, for the bodies and faces that are changing. Some days, it all feels like a stone in the chest. Other days, it feels like an open sky. Both are real, and both belong. The gift is remembering that our pace is ours to choose. We are not required to rush through the seasons of our lives. Slowing down is not a weakness. It is not a sign we’re falling behind. Slowing down is wisdom. It is a way of listening closely to ourselves, of honoring what both our gratitude and our grief are trying to teach us.

When you notice a heavy moment arrive, pause and give it a name. What does it feel like in your body—tightness, restlessness, heaviness in your chest? Where do you think it comes from—an old memory, an unspoken worry, the turning of a season?

Now write about one small way you can respond to yourself with kindness in that moment. Maybe it’s stepping outside for fresh air, putting on a song that soothes you, or simply whispering, “I’m allowed to rest.” Close by noting: what do these moments teach you about what you truly need?. ✍🏽
